I might add, simply using files for user data — documents, address book, calendar — is totally plausible to me. Make these files non-dotfiles in the home directory. Maybe make them a single file with a MIME type, so you can just drag and drop your calendar or address book between systems. Or use dotfiles. […]

Evolution guys bringing up complex data structures again, here’s an old mail on the subject. Check my “list of things I was planning to get around to” in that mail, ah the follies of youth… Storing “structs” (or dicts/hashes) as little XML strings could be a totally sane underengineered solution, but surely needs some convenience […]

Satellite TV guy came today and said we had to put the dish on a big pole in the middle of the yard, or chainsaw a bunch of trees; time to fall back to Comcast… IBM laptop support is impressive: laptop hard disk died, I called late morning, they had me a new one the […]

I think we finally have the whole lineup for which candidates fit in which positions for Hiring Phase 1, and thus will be able get back to everyone who’s applied pretty soon. Crossing my fingers, I don’t like leaving people hanging, but it just takes a lot of time to do responsibly. More positions should […]

2004-02-16 (Monday)

Had a pretty nice vacation weekend in New York, I’m still here but shifted from vacation to Red Hat business trip. We had a lot of fun the first couple days. Some part of walking around in the cold, eating dubious food in Chinatown, and drinking a bit too much made us really sick on […]

Still no Internet at home. DSL is apparently unavailable so it looks like we’ll get cable instead. At work, I’m beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel and may get back time to maintain metacity properly yet. In the meantime, please mail me with any emergencies. I hear rumors of crashes […]

Arrived

The hard bits of moving and housing now done! All that remains is to catch a plane back to Raleigh, hop in the car, and drive the car up to our house. Well, modulo some details. Some new developers start at Red Hat this week, which we’re excited about. We’re giving some open source desktop […]

Moving

Packed my cube yesterday, only a couple hours of going through the pile of paper on my desk. I was amazed at the age of the paper on the bottom. GNOME nostalgia packed includes the squeaky rubber GNOME (see item 7), an original Ximian monkey, and the big GNOME foot used for conference booths back […]

linux.conf.au ends

Well, it isn’t quite over yet. Still going back for closing comments in a couple hours. Very nice conference overall. Gave a keynote talk this morning, which just destroyed my throat somehow, though it was only an hour of talking. I suggested deciding who to buy your Linux desktop from by comparing this photo with […]

arrived!

Successfully arrived at linux.conf.au. So far the awesomest conference ever; Michael kindly picked us up at the airport, hotel room is sweet, free Internet in the hotel and around the city, nice bag/hat/shirt, the works. Adelaide is a beautiful city from what I’ve seen, very similar to California. (This post was originally found at http://log.ometer.com/2004–01.html#12)
